Set up
Put one player at the kitchen line and one at the opposite baseline in each active lane. The kitchen player begins every rally with a controlled deep feed that lands like a return of serve.
Court: One straight-ahead half-court lane for two players, or both half-court lanes for four players
Equipment:paddles, pickleballs
Run the drill
- Let the opening feed bounce at the baseline, then choose a third-shot drop or drive and play the rally live inside the half-court lane.
- The baseline player advances only when the shot earns space, split-steps before each opponent contact, and uses resets when stopped in transition.
- The kitchen player holds the line, keeps attackable balls deep, and applies pressure without making the opening feed unplayable.
- Use rally scoring. The baseline player wins the game by reaching 7 points before the kitchen player reaches 11.
- After a game, switch starting positions and play again so both players practise the disadvantaged baseline role.
Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.
Roles and rotation
2 players
- Player 1: kitchen player; supplies the deep return-like feed, holds the line, and plays toward 11
- Player 2: baseline player; plays the simulated third shot, works forward through transition, and plays toward 7
Rotate: Finish one game, switch the two starting positions, and begin a second game; if time expires, record both scores.
Repetitions: Both players contest every rally and receive one game in each tactical role when the block allows. Keep the block clock as the ceiling even if the second game is unfinished.
4 players
- Player 1: left-lane kitchen player; supplies the return-like feed, holds the line, and plays toward 11
- Player 2: left-lane baseline player; plays the simulated third shot, transitions forward, and plays toward 7
- Player 3: right-lane kitchen player; supplies the return-like feed, holds the line, and plays toward 11
- Player 4: right-lane baseline player; plays the simulated third shot, transitions forward, and plays toward 7
Rotate: Run two independent games at once, then switch kitchen and baseline positions within each lane after a game; switch opponents for the next round if time remains.
Repetitions: All four players stay active in two simultaneous half-court games and rotate through both tactical roles. Pause both lanes before retrieving a stray ball that crosses between them; otherwise no added time is required.
Targets and cues
- Complete a game in each starting role and track how often the baseline player reaches the kitchen under control before the rally ends.
- Treat the opening bounce as a third-shot decision: drive only with a clear purpose, drop when it creates time, and stop before every contact in transition.
Common failure: Charging forward after a weak third shot instead of reading the kitchen player's paddle and preparing to reset. Feeding a short or attackable opening ball that does not resemble a deep return of serve.
Good miss:A deliberate drop, drive, or reset selected from a balanced position that misses narrowly while following the correct transition decision.
