Set up
Mark a drive target and a lower soft-contact target. Begin far enough back to self-feed a controlled drive and take one or two safe steps before the rebound.
Court: A wall or rebounder with a clear approach lane and safe stopping space
Equipment:paddle, pickleballs, painter's tape or chalk
Solo setup: solid practice wall or rebounder
Wall or rebounder
- Solid wall: The drive returns quickly, so begin farther back and use controlled pace that still allows a safe move and split-step.
- Rebounder: The net softens the drive and may return it higher; tune angle and distance so the rebound reaches a realistic transition contact.
Run the drill
- Drop-feed the ball, let it bounce, and hit a controlled third-shot drive into the drive target.
- Move forward, split-step before the rebound, and play that rebound softly toward the lower target as the simulated fifth-shot drop.
- Catch the next rebound by hand, return to the starting position, and begin a new repetition.
- Alternate forehand and backhand fifth-shot contacts without turning the first drive into an all-out swing.
Timing: about 16 minutes for the whole block. Count full two-shot sequences and stop at the block time.
Roles and rotation
1 player
- Player 1: self-feeder, drive hitter, advancing drop hitter, catcher, and sequence counter
Rotate: No rotation; change the starting wing after five complete sequences.
Repetitions: The player performs both contacts and resets every repetition by hand. Calibration and returning to the starting position are included in the block.
Targets and cues
- Complete ten drive-move-drop sequences in which the second contact is visibly softer and the player is balanced before both swings.
- Treat the drive as a setup, stop before the rebound, and shorten the second swing to change pace deliberately.
Common failure: Running through the rebound or hitting the simulated fifth ball with the same drive motion.
Good miss:A controlled soft second contact that misses the low wall target after a balanced split-step.
