Serve, Return, Third, Catch

Create realistic third shots by earning them through a live serve and return.

Productive level range:3.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Start with a server and returner on opposite baselines; the returner moves forward after returning.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Play a live serve and return; the server hits a drop or drive for the third, and the returner catches the fourth ball.
  2. Reset immediately and rotate server and returner so each player sees varied returns.

Timing: about 10 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: server and third-shot hitter; serves, reads the return, then drops or drives
  • Player 2: returner and catcher; returns deep, advances, and catches the fourth ball

Rotate: Swap the complete serve-third and return-catch jobs after each short round.

Repetitions: Both players receive equal repetitions in both jobs. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: serving team; the server or partner hits the third as in a live point
  • Players 3 and 4: returning team; the returner's partner catches the fourth ball

Rotate: Rotate server and returner within each team, then swap serving sides halfway.

Repetitions: Every player serves, returns, hits thirds, and catches during the block. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
