Set up
Mark the final third of each service box. Begin with one server and one returner on opposite baselines along a diagonal.
Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed
Equipment:paddles, pickleballs
Run the drill
- Name a deep target before each serve, then serve and return into the last third of the court.
- Keep one server for half the block, switch roles, and have every returner move forward immediately.
Timing: about 10 minutes for the whole block.
Roles and rotation
2 players
- Player 1: server; serves every ball from the chosen service box
- Player 2: returner; returns deep, then takes two or three steps toward the kitchen
Rotate: Swap server and returner halfway through; change diagonals within each half.
Repetitions: Each player spends half the block serving and half returning. Split the working time evenly.
4 players
- Players 1 and 2: servers; each serves to the opponent diagonally across
- Players 3 and 4: returners; each returns their diagonal ball deep and advances
Rotate: The two sides swap serving and returning jobs halfway through the block.
Repetitions: Two serve-return repetitions run simultaneously, so everyone contacts each round. No added time is required.
Targets and cues
- Land both the serve and return in the final third while the returner advances after contact.
- Name the landing target before contact; use one serve motion and move through the return.
Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.
Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
