Transition Out-and-Back

Move from the kitchen to the baseline and back in controlled stages, returning every ball softly to the kitchen; this pattern is also commonly taught as Slinky, Accordion, or a back-and-forth transition drill.

Productive level range:3.0–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put a stationary feeder at one kitchen line and the working player at the opposite kitchen line. Optionally mark several small steps through transition to the baseline.

Court: One straight-ahead half-court lane for two players, or both half-court lanes for four players

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs, optional flat markers

Run the drill

  1. Begin with three consecutive cooperative dinks while both players are at their kitchen lines.
  2. The working player takes one controlled step backward, becomes balanced, and returns three more soft balls into the feeder's kitchen before moving again.
  3. Continue three controlled returns at each position until the working player reaches the baseline; use drops or resets rather than driving through the feeder.
  4. After three successful baseline drops, take one controlled step forward after each three-ball set until returning to the kitchen line.
  5. Stay at the current position when the rally breaks, restart that three-ball count, and complete the full out-and-back path before switching roles.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: stationary kitchen feeder; returns playable balls to the worker's current position and judges the three-ball count
  • Player 2: moving worker; completes three soft returns at each position while travelling to the baseline and back

Rotate: Switch feeder and worker after the full out-and-back path, or halfway through the block if the first trip is unfinished.

Repetitions: One player receives continuous drop and reset contacts while the feeder practises controlled fourth shots to changing depths. Split the available time evenly so both players receive a working turn.

4 players

  • Player 1: left-lane stationary kitchen feeder; returns to the worker's current depth and judges the count
  • Player 2: left-lane moving worker; travels to the baseline and back with three soft returns per position
  • Player 3: right-lane stationary kitchen feeder; returns to the worker's current depth and judges the count
  • Player 4: right-lane moving worker; travels to the baseline and back with three soft returns per position

Rotate: Run both lanes together, then switch feeder and worker within each lane halfway through the block.

Repetitions: Two independent lanes keep every player hitting while both workers complete the same staged path. Pause both lanes before retrieving a ball that crosses between them; otherwise no added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Drifting during contact or advancing after a high reset that the feeder could attack. Turning the baseline repetitions into drives instead of preserving the soft kitchen target.

Good miss:A balanced drop or reset that clears safely and misses the kitchen narrowly while preserving a compact swing.
