Tight Spaces

Use narrow down-the-line lanes to train precise dinks and faster reactions without crosscourt margin.

Productive level range:3.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Mark two longitudinal half-court lanes and put one opponent at each kitchen line in every active lane.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Play only up the line in half-court lanes; dinks, attacks, counters, and lobs are live.
  2. Use rally scoring, then rotate lanes so every player works both forehand and backhand lines.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Players 1 and 2: opponents in one down-the-line half-court lane; every legal shot is live

Rotate: Alternate who starts the rally and switch to the other lane halfway.

Repetitions: Both players perform identical dink, attack, counter, and lob decisions. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: work in the first half-court lane
  • Players 3 and 4: work in the second half-court lane

Rotate: Keep both pairs active; halfway through, switch lanes and opponents.

Repetitions: Both narrow lanes run continuously, so every player receives the same live-ball work. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
