Drive-or-Drop Decision

Make the third-shot decision visible by calling the intended response before contact.

Productive level range:3.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put a feeder at the kitchen and a hitter near the baseline; prepare an even mix of low and attackable feeds.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Feed alternating low and attackable balls to a player moving through transition.
  2. The hitter calls drop or attack before contact; score the decision first and execution second.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: feeder; mixes low and attackable balls without announcing them
  • Player 2: decision-maker; calls drop or attack before contact, then executes

Rotate: Swap feeder and decision-maker halfway through the block.

Repetitions: Each player receives the same number and mix of decision repetitions. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: kitchen feeders; vary height and judge the calls
  • Players 3 and 4: transitioning hitters; call and execute against their diagonal feeder

Rotate: Feeder and hitter pairs swap ends halfway through the block.

Repetitions: Two diagonal repetitions run simultaneously, so everyone stays active. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
