Set up
Put a feeder near the baseline and a receiver at the kitchen; the feeder privately plans an even mix of believable in and out drives.
Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed
Equipment:paddles, pickleballs
Run the drill
- The feeder mixes in and out drives without telegraphing; the receiver plays or leaves each ball.
- Score correct leaves, penalize wrong leaves and touches, and switch roles after an even feed mix.
Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.
Roles and rotation
2 players
- Player 1: feeder; drives a concealed, roughly even mix of believable in and out balls
- Player 2: receiver; plays balls read as in and physically clears balls read as out
Rotate: Swap feeder and receiver after an equal number of mixed feeds.
Repetitions: Each player receives the same number of live in-or-out decisions. Split the working time evenly.
4 players
- Players 1 and 2: feeders; drive an unannounced in/out mix and judge where each ball lands
- Players 3 and 4: receivers; make individual play-or-leave decisions and call for each other
Rotate: Feeding and receiving teams swap ends halfway through the block.
Repetitions: Both receivers make live reads while their partners communicate; all players then swap roles. No added time is required.
Targets and cues
- Score more correct plays and leaves than wrong touches or wrong leaves across an even, unpredictable feed mix.
- Receiver keeps the paddle down while leaving, clears the body, and turns to watch the ball land.
Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.
Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
