Set up
Form two doubles teams and choose one focus-linked rule for the entire round before the first serve.
Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed
Equipment:paddles, pickleballs
Run the drill
- Choose one focus-linked rule: every third is a drop, no attack before shot five, only down-the-line dinks, or one lob per point.
- Play full doubles points, call middle balls, and change the constraint only between rounds.
Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.
Roles and rotation
4 players
- Players 1 and 2: first doubles team; obey the chosen rule and call middle balls
- Players 3 and 4: opposing team under the identical constraint
Rotate: Use normal serving rotation; switch ends or choose a new focus-linked rule between rounds only.
Repetitions: All four players play complete points and share communication responsibility. No added time is required.
Targets and cues
- Use the reduced option set to anticipate legally available shots while still playing complete doubles points.
- State the constraint before the round, call middle balls, and do not change the rule to rescue a difficult point.
Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.
Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
