Set up
Add this rule to a live rally (from the kitchen, baseline, or other starting positions). Assign an opponent to each player. They will predict their shots.
Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed
Equipment:paddles, pickleballs
Run the drill
- Add this overlay to a live rally and call the anticipated shot right before every opposing contact.
- Keep the choice simple (e.g., left/middle/right, soft/hard, drop/drive, dink/attack), record wrong reads without changing the point, and compare cues afterward.
Timing: about 9 minutes for the whole block.
Roles and rotation
2 players
- Players 1 and 2: live opponents and readers; each predicts middle or wide before the other contacts
Rotate: No role swap is needed; alternate the underlying rally initiator normally.
Repetitions: Both players make a prediction on every opposing contact. Split the working time evenly.
4 players
- Players 1 and 2: first doubles team; each predicts the placement of the opponent across from them
- Players 3 and 4: opposing team making the same pre-contact predictions
Rotate: Keep normal live-game rotation and change assigned opponent halfway.
Repetitions: Every player predicts on each assigned opponent contact while remaining live in the rally. No added time is required.
Targets and cues
- Make an audible middle-or-wide prediction before contact, then identify which visible cue supported or contradicted it.
- Commit before contact; use paddle angle, body position, and court geometry rather than the result of the shot.
Common failure: Failing to look at the opponent and their shot before making a prediction.
Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
