Skinny Singles from the Kitchen

Test dinks, attacks, and counters under half-court live scoring.

Productive level range:3.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Mark one half-court lane and put opponents at its kitchen lines; every shot must stay in that lane.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Play rally-scored points from the kitchen in one half of the court.
  2. Complete straight, crosscourt backhand, and crosscourt forehand rounds before switching lanes.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Players 1 and 2: skinny-singles opponents at the kitchen; both play every ball live

Rotate: Alternate the initiator and complete straight plus both crosscourt rounds.

Repetitions: Both players receive symmetric live dink, attack, and counter decisions. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: skinny-singles opponents in the left half-court lane
  • Players 3 and 4: skinny-singles opponents in the right half-court lane

Rotate: Each lane alternates the initiator; switch lanes or opponents halfway.

Repetitions: Two independent games keep all four players active. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
