Overhead Decision Tree

Call and execute one of three overhead responses based on depth and body position.

Productive level range:3.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put a feeder at the kitchen and a worker near the opposite kitchen line with room to retreat safely.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Feed varied lobs; the worker calls rip it for a ball in front, hook it for a playable ball behind the ideal point, or let it go for an out ball.
  2. Use a drop step and sideways shuffle, then switch feeder and worker after an even mix.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: feeder; supplies a fair mix of in-front, behind, and out lobs
  • Player 2: decision-maker; calls rip, hook, or leave and executes the safe response

Rotate: Swap feeder and decision-maker after an equal mixed sequence.

Repetitions: Each player receives the same distribution of three-way reads. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: feeders; alternate varied lobs and record the worker's call
  • Players 3 and 4: decision-makers; alternate complete rip, hook, or leave repetitions

Rotate: Feeders and decision-makers swap jobs halfway through the block.

Repetitions: One worker moves at a time while the second recovers and verifies the call. Use two equal rotations within the block.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
