Five-Dink to Attack

Create patience by requiring a stable dink exchange before attacking becomes legal.

Productive level range:3.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put all players at the kitchen line and agree that an attack is illegal until five controlled dinks are complete.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Complete five controlled dinks before either player may speed up.
  2. After the fifth dink play the rally out; reset the count and begin the next point.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Players 1 and 2: opponents; both count the opening dinks and may attack after the fifth

Rotate: Alternate who initiates each rally and switch diagonals halfway.

Repetitions: Both players perform identical patience and attack decisions. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: first kitchen-line team; share middle balls and may attack after dink five
  • Players 3 and 4: opposing team under the same five-dink rule

Rotate: Alternate the initiating team and switch ends halfway.

Repetitions: All four players stay live throughout each rally. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
