Figure 8

Move one ball around four kitchen-line players in a continuous down-the-line and crosscourt figure-eight circuit.

Productive level range:2.5–4.0, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put Players 1 and 3 on the same kitchen line, left and right. Put Player 2 straight across from Player 1 and Player 4 straight across from Player 3.

Court: One full pickleball court with all four players at the kitchen line

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Follow one four-ball circuit: Player 1 dinks straight to Player 2, Player 2 dinks crosscourt to Player 3, Player 3 dinks straight to Player 4, and Player 4 dinks crosscourt to Player 1.
  2. Complete eight circuits cooperatively, with each pair shifting together toward the ball, then reverse the direction of the circuit.
  3. After both directions are stable, score one point against the player who first misses the kitchen or sends the ball to the wrong position.

Timing: about 10 minutes for the whole block.

Roles and rotation

4 players

  • Player 1: left-side initiator; dinks straight to Player 2, then receives the completing crosscourt ball from Player 4
  • Player 2: opposite Player 1; receives straight and sends crosscourt to Player 3
  • Player 3: beside Player 1; receives crosscourt and sends straight to Player 4
  • Player 4: opposite Player 3; receives straight and sends crosscourt to Player 1

Rotate: Reverse the circuit after eight complete cycles so each position practises the opposite directional sequence.

Repetitions: All four players contact once per circuit and move with their same-side partner after every ball. Keep one ball active and use the scheduled block as the ceiling after both directions receive equal time.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Following the ball as a spectator, losing the four-player order, or leaving a gap because only the hitter moves.

Good miss:A dink that reaches the correct next player but lands just beyond the kitchen while the four-player order stays intact.
