Deep Groundstroke Targets

Direct self-fed forehand and backhand groundstrokes toward deep left, middle, and right targets.

Productive level range:2.5–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Mark deep left, middle, and right zones beyond the far service line and place a safe ball supply near the hitting baseline.

Court: A full pickleball court with three deep target zones

Equipment:paddle, pickleballs, court net, cones or flat targets, optional basket

Solo setup: pickleball court

Run the drill

  1. Drop or gently toss the ball in front, let it bounce once, call a target, and hit a balanced groundstroke over the net.
  2. Hit ten forehands to each zone, then ten backhands, changing court side halfway through.
  3. Record only the landing result; do not claim the stationary feed reproduces a return of serve.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block. Record each ten-ball set and stop when the scheduled block ends.

Roles and rotation

1 player

  • Player 1: self-feeder, groundstroke hitter, target caller, scorer, and collector

Rotate: No rotation; switch wings and court sides after each target series.

Repetitions: The player performs every repetition and records each target result. Batch retrieval is included in the block clock.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Changing both the self-feed and the swing while trying to diagnose a missed target.

Good miss:A deep ball that misses the named lane while the feed, contact, and recovery remain repeatable.
