Connect a deep return to a decisive, balanced move toward the kitchen line.

Productive level range:2.5–3.5, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Mark the final three feet of the return court and place a server and returner on opposite baselines.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Serve to the returner, who aims within three feet of the baseline and moves forward immediately.
  2. Recover to the baseline after each rep; complete ten returns, then switch roles.

Timing: about 10 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: server; starts each repetition with a legal, hittable serve
  • Player 2: returner; returns deep, advances to the kitchen, then resets at the baseline

Rotate: Swap server and returner after 10 returns, then repeat on the other diagonal.

Repetitions: Each player completes the same number of return-and-advance repetitions. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: servers, each serving to the opponent on their diagonal
  • Players 3 and 4: returners, each returning deep, advancing, and resetting

Rotate: Swap the serving and returning sides after 10 returns per player.

Repetitions: Both diagonals operate together, giving every player one job on every repetition. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
