Quick Hands Patterns

Expose weaker forehand, backhand, and crossbody volleys by practising each pattern before random play.

Productive level range:4.0–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put one pair at opposing kitchen lines and agree on forehand, backhand, and diagonal crossbody target channels.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Cycle forehand-to-forehand, backhand-to-backhand, forehand-to-opponent-backhand, and backhand-to-opponent-forehand.
  2. Finish with a random hands exchange while keeping the same compact preparation.

Timing: about 14 minutes for the whole block.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Players 1 and 2: cooperative volley partners; both follow the announced hand-to-hand pattern

Rotate: Alternate the initiator for each pattern and switch court sides before random play.

Repetitions: Both players receive equal contacts in all four hand combinations. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: first volley pair in one half-court lane
  • Players 3 and 4: second volley pair in the other half-court lane

Rotate: Each pair alternates the initiator; switch lanes or partners halfway.

Repetitions: Two independent exchanges give every player all four hand patterns. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
