Push Volley Dink

Pair the decision to volley a deep dink with a compact forward push and active feet.

Productive level range:3.0–5.0+, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Mark a line two feet behind the kitchen line; put a feeder and worker opposite each other at the kitchen.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Mark a line two feet behind the kitchen; the feeder varies dink depth without manufacturing volleys.
  2. The worker steps in to push-volley balls that would land beyond the line, then switches roles.

Timing: about 10 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: feeder; plays realistic dinks with varied depth without manufacturing volleys
  • Player 2: worker; reads depth and either push-volleys or lets the ball bounce

Rotate: Swap feeder and worker halfway through; work straight and both diagonals.

Repetitions: Each player receives equal decision and push-volley time. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 3: workers on opposite sides; each reads feeds and chooses volley or bounce
  • Players 2 and 4: feeders for their partner; vary depth realistically and score the choice

Rotate: Each worker swaps with their feeder halfway through the block.

Repetitions: Two worker-feeder exchanges run in parallel, so all four players stay active. Use two equal rotations within the block.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
