Catch and Move

Teach kitchen-line positioning by removing the swing before adding a live dink.

Productive level range:2.0–3.0, inclusive. This is practice guidance, not an official rating.

Set up

Put a tosser and mover opposite each other at the kitchen; leave several feet of safe lateral space on both sides.

Court: One pickleball court; use the named half-court lanes when instructed

Equipment:paddles, pickleballs

Run the drill

  1. Toss left and right; the mover gets behind the ball and catches it in front of the knee on that side.
  2. Repeat with a paddle while the partner catches each reply, then progress to live cooperative dinks.

Timing: about 10 minutes for the whole block. Use the stated repetition goal as a target and the scheduled block time as a hard ceiling.

Roles and rotation

2 players

  • Player 1: tosser and catcher; moves each toss left or right and receives the reply
  • Player 2: mover; catches, then dinks, then rallies while using active lateral footwork

Rotate: Swap tosser and mover after completing all three progressions.

Repetitions: Each player completes the same number of toss, paddle, and live-dink repetitions. Split the working time evenly.

4 players

  • Players 1 and 2: tosser and mover in the left half-court lane
  • Players 3 and 4: tosser and mover in the right half-court lane

Rotate: Each pair swaps jobs after all three progressions; pairs change lanes halfway if time allows.

Repetitions: Two independent lanes keep every player active with an equal moving turn. No added time is required.

Targets and cues

Common failure: Rushing the next contact before the player has recovered position.

Good miss:A purposeful miss made while following the stated target and movement cue.
